Miami, FL – On Wednesday, May 7, the Overtown Youth Center Inc. (OYC), a program of the Mourning Family Foundation, welcomed Major League Soccer owner and former player, David Beckham. Hundreds of students in the program met the international soccer star, who was greeted by Alonzo and Tracy Mourning.

“Soccer is a game that is still new to African American youth in urban communities, however, in Miami there is great excitement around David Beckham bringing a team to our city,” said Tina Brown, OYC Executive Director. “Our students immediately recognized Beckham, and they were very anxious to have him sign autographs and talk with him.”

Beckham toured the academic and recreational areas of the facility with the Mourning family, learning about OYC’s mission and services for local kids and teens.

During the last ten years, OYC has served as a safe haven for hundreds of students in the Overtown community, an area most known for all its negative factors; a place where children encounter numerous obstacles that hinder their future.

OYC’s mission is to inspire, empower, and enrich the lives of youth and families in the Overtown community. On a daily basis, the program strives to transform the lives of youth people by providing an array of services ranging from academic support and enrichment opportunities to meaningful life skill lessons/ activities. OYC’s team is dedicated and committed to providing children with countless opportunities to maximize their full potential.
